This event is co-organized by Oikos Think Tank and Member of European Parliament Sara Matthieu, to present the book on Just Transition, published within the GEF project Just Transition.
This transnational project tackles the question of a Just Transition – transforming from an extractive to a regenerative economy in a just and equitable way to find the necessary support among the population. It seeks to show that the green family, including GEF in its specific role, is a leading actor in the development of futureproof politics and policies, developed in a sensitive way that keeps in mind local specificities.

Focus panel 9 – Building an energy sector compatible with ecological limits
Europe is struggling to provide clean and affordable energy to its citizens. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EU has taken crisis measures aimed at energy savings, diversification of energy supplies and accelerated roll-out of renewable energy. But the EU is still far removed from an independent, resilient, clean and socially sustainable energy system. In this panel we look at possible systemic changes the EU’s energy architecture would require to provide stable, secure, affordable and clean energy to all. Should we move from energy efficiency to energy sufficiency? What is the appropriate (mix of) ownership for energy provision in Europe? What changes would be required to the governance of European energy infrastructure, to achieve an energy sector compatible with ecological limits?

Onze economie, verslaafd aan groei en winst, buit mens en natuur uit. Levensondersteunende natuurlijke systemen
staan op instorten, het klimaatleed stijgt. Dat stellen wetenschappers helder vast en is het vertrekpunt van de degrowth benadering. Dat formuleert een afdoend antwoord door haar visie voor een andere economie, die op democratische wijze de doorstroom aan energie en grondstoffen radicaal terugschroeft, zodat iedereen op aarde een goed leven kan leiden. Deze omgroei van de economie betekent niet alleen minder burn-outs, files of afvalbergen maar vooral meer natuur, een rustiger levensritme, beter openbaar vervoer en meer tijd om te zorgen voor elkaar.

‘Hoop moet je verdienen’ schrijft Greta Thunberg in Het Klimaatboek. Daarom gaat ECOPOLIS 2023 de uitdaging aan om hoopvol activisme aan te wakkeren. Hoe zet je bezorgdheid over klimaat en natuur om in engagement? Waar ligt de middenweg tussen naïviteit en doemdenken?
ECOPOLIS 2023 keert dit jaar terug naar Brussel op 18 november. Met het thema ‘Hope is Action’ wil Ecopolis bijdragen aan een betere wereld, zonder daarbij de vaak schrijnende realiteit te negeren en met extra aandacht voor stemmen die doorgaans niet gehoord worden. Laat je inspireren door schrijvers, kunstenaars en andere denkers. Verken bijzondere plekken in de stad en volg workshops van enthousiaste doeners. Neem deel aan ECOPOLIS 2023 en draag bij aan een positieve verandering.

Goed nieuws! Naast de jaarlijkse ECOPOLIS* events in Brussel en Kortrijk, slaat op zaterdag 9 maart ECOPOLIS haar vleugels neer in Gent op uitnodiging van Kunstencentrum 404. Die dag zal de Gentse Vooruit gevuld zijn met talks, documentaires, performances, ... over de toekomst van landbouw en voedsel. De focus ligt op agro-ecologie als visie voor de toekomst én concrete en groeiende praktijk.

It is with gratitude that I look back at the 10th edition of ECOPOLIS that took place on November 9th in Brussel, The theme was Hope Needs Action!, and we started with a keynote by Mikaela Loach, the Jamaican-British author who wrote the wonderful book It’s Not That Radical,
But we also had from France the great Isabelle Fremeaux who spoke about artivism. Ant he people curious about how we can strengthen our democracy, came to listen to the British author Erica Benner, but also to Sophie How, who explained how Wales, for instance, decided to completely redirect the budget provided for car infrastructure towards sustainable mobility. And this is not where ECOPOLIS’ rich programme stopped. We also talked about food and energy. Because in her book Mangez les riches (Eat the Rich), French journalist Nora Bouazzouni shows how (healthy) food is also a class struggle. And the historian Jean-Baptiste Fressoz provoked the energy debate with his argument that renewable energy will not stop climate disruption, for that you have to change the whole economy.

After a lecture by Carolyn Steel, we will engage in a discussion on what ‘Sitopic thinking’ can mean in a Belgian context with Dirk Holemans. Afterwards there will be time for questions from the audience and winter school participants.About the public talk: Food impacts almost every aspect of our lives. From the way we feel to how we structure our day, and from international politics to the way we design our houses and cities: the centrality of food cannot be overstated. Yet, for many people today, the relationship we have with our foods is profoundly disturbed. Alarmed by the societal and environmental destruction this ensues, London based architect Carolyn Steel calls for a serious reconsideration of the place and value given to food in modern capitalist societies.Following her reflection on the intricate relationships between food and cities in Hungry city, her most recent book Sitopia dares to envision how we can change our ways of producing and consuming foods, and thus regain the lost art of eating well. Literally meaning ‘foodplace’ (from the Greek sitos, food and topos, place), the notion of Sitopia invites us to once again centralise questions of food to address today’s social and environmental challenges.The keynote and conversation will be held in English.

We weten wat er op het spel staat. De klimaatcrisis vraagt om actie. En toch botsen we keer op keer op dezelfde muren. We beschikken over data, beleid en oplossingen - maar missen iets fundamentelers: een gedeeld verhaal over de wereld waarin we leven.
Op deze ochtend nodigen Fredo De Smet en Dirk Holemans je uit voor een ander soort gesprek. Geen debat over doelstellingen of deadlines, maar een verkenning van de onderstroom. Over wereldbeelden.
Als systeemdenker laat Dirk Holemans al jaren zien dat een wereldbeeld niet zomaar een mening is, maar de bril waardoor we alles waarnemen - van economie tot ecologie, van leiderschap tot hoop. Aan de hand van het werk van drie vrouwelijke changemakers - Lynn Margulis, Suzanne Simard en Robin Wall Kimmerer - laat hij zien hoe we ons perspectief kunnen kantelen: richting verbondenheid, regeneratie en actieve hoop.
Daarna gaan we samen aan de slag. We oefenen met het kijken vanuit een ander wereldbeeld. Hoe verandert je project, je taal, je impact als je vertrekt van andere waarden? Hoe is het om niet te denken in symptomen, maar als een systeem.

The Good Wave is een netwerk van professionals die allemaal één ding gemeen hebben: ze willen op een positieve manier mensen in beweging zetten. Learning labs en Wavemaker sessies reiken tools en inzichten aan om dat effectiever te doen. ‘Powered by’ sociale en humane wetenschappen, met een focus op bruikbaarheid in het dagelijkse leven. The Good Wave inspireert en verbindt, zodat we voluit van elkaar kunnen leren.

Benieuwd om het Gent van de 19de eeuw te leren kennen door de lens van voedsel en drank?Gent in de 19de eeuw, het Manchester van het Noorden: nog één keer vergaart de roemrijke stad rijkdom en zet ze zichzelf op de kaart met haar textielproductie. Terwijl in statige burgerhuizen de Bourgeoisie geniet van de gerechten van sterrenchef Cauderlier, een kopje chocolademelk en een heerlijk sigaartje uit Java, sterven in smerige beluiken mensen aan cholera en tyfus en heerst er ondervoeding, de grote massa overleeft op brood en aardappelen. In de kroegen vol jenever en schraal bier weerklinken de liedjes van Karel Waeri als voedingsbodem voor een nieuw idee ‘Het Socialisme’. Zo zullen arbeiders terug hun lot in eigen handen nemen.Op deze wandeling nemen Dirk en Noël je mee naar een Gent vol uitdaging, klassenverschil die ook op het bord te merken is, maar vertellen ook over ‘de verbeteringe van Gent’, de opkomst van de trein en het verschijnen van publieke badhuizen.
